Fuell 4/2010

How many Buell-based Choppers have you laid your eyes on? I’d be willing to bet a nickel that you could count them using the fingers on one hand. I’ve seen a couple, but nothing like this two wheeler. Adam Canni and Jailhouse Choppers teamed up to design and build this scooter for Adam Chumita. Chumita is a stunt rider who rides Buell motorcycles at shows and exhibitions, so it’s no surprise that he wanted a custom bike built around a Buell drivetrain.

Jailhouse Choppers constructed the one-off rigid frame to fit Chumita’s stature. The motor and transmission feature a unit construction; therefore they share a case, which is a head start for staying organized. The  1200cc (73”) Buell XB motor is compact and well organized to begin with, and perfect for a small, maneuverable motorcycle intended for street riding. A custom made Jailhouse Choppers air cleaner sits in front of a 42mm Mikuni flat-slide carburetor, ensuring only clean air gets into the mix.

The five-speed Buell gearbox is hand shifted from the left side of the motorcycle using the stock shift pattern; only here it is delineated as one forward and four back. Old-style foot clutches were rocker style. Indian was toe-down disengaged; Harley-Davidson® clutches were heel-down disengaged. The rocker style clutch stayed in the disengaged position until “rocked” to the engaged position. The clutch on this motor is engaged immediately when the clutch foot is lifted off the clutch. The fact that no front brake is available, and the clutch cannot be rocked into a disengaged position makes it a suicide clutch.
