If you thought Paul Yaffe, of Phoenix, Arizona’s Bagger Nation, only builds custom Baggers, you would be wrong. He occasionally puts together a Chopper or two, this black yesteryear-style Springer looks like it’s from 1970, but runs and rides like a modern machine. How can you not enjoy that Black Suede paint job by Gary Crisp, or the old school pinstriped accents by Ron Hernandez on the tank, frame and rear fender?
Old school styling doesn’t prohibit the use of a 96” Harley-Davidson® Twin Cam motor. Paul made some mods to a SuperTrapp exhaust system prior to bolting it on Old School. Feeding the motor the fuel/air mixture is a 42mm Mikuni flat-slide carburetor. With a nominal compression ratio of 9.5:1 the motor produces 85 horses and 90 ft.-lbs. of torque.
The up to date left-side drive six-speed gearbox accepts power from the motor via a Performance Machine belt-driven primary. A Performance Machine transmission sprocket sends power to the rear wheel via chain.
The motor and transmission live in a ’06 Paul Yaffe Originals single downtube Chopper-style frame with six inches of stretch. Neck rake is 40°. The motor is solidly mounted in the frame.
