Neal Schon's Ness Lowliner 5/2010

Neal Schon, the lead guitarist and leader of the rock band Journey, loves motorcycles. Not just any motorcycles, American-made motorcycles. He owns a Victory Vision Bagger with the full Arlen Ness treatment; and a Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide and Screamin’ Eagle Dyna, both customized by Cory Ness. It’s safe to say that Neal’s number-one passion behind music is motorcycles, and that his lead customizers are Arlen and Cory Ness. The collaboration between Neal and Cory has been going on since 1996, and judging by the success that both men are enjoying; it doesn’t seem like they will be dissolving their partnership.

Neal’s Ness Lowliner production bike is all about smooth power and handling, this long-and-low cruiser is built for high-speed touring and canyon carving. A Ness built rubber-mounted frame with external rear shocks from Progressive Suspension, absorbs the vibrations from the motor and the impact from potholes in the road. The superior handling is due to a very mild 38° of neck rake with an additional four degrees of rake in the Flat-Ness triple trees.

A 21” Ness Evil-7 spoke wheel rides up front, it is equipped with a Ness caliper and Performance Machine rotor. The show-polished 124” S&S motor supplies Neal with all of the power that he needs. A six-speed Ness RSD transmission assures Neal of reduced rpm at highway speeds for vibration-free riding. The stretched gas tank and Shorty front and rear fenders were all built in-house by Ness. The massive 18 x 10.5” Evil-7 rear wheel sports a 300mm Avon tire and is also equipped with a Ness caliper and Performance Machine rotor which makes stopping this beast a pleasure. Since this is an Arlen Ness production bike, virtually every accessory is manufactured by Ness; the only exception would be the handmade Danny Gray seat.

As children we waited by the mailbox for the Sears catalog to arrive, as adults we wait for the catalogs from our favorite motorcycle-parts manufacturers. The Arlen Ness catalog is always one of the nicer catalogs you will find; it includes every part imaginable to upgrade your Harley or Victory. An Arlen Ness production bike is the Ness catalog in living color!
