Blue Balls 5/2010

The first time I met Ron from Chop Docs Choppers, he had a wrecked Road King that he converted from trash to treasure. Ron has a habit off taking bikes and parts that others don’t see value in, and transforming them into highly sought after pieces of art. If you ever need fiberglass work, Ron is your man for that too. Living in the Detroit area means a short riding season, but on the bright side, Ron has a lot of time to build one-off customs. Blue Balls is the name of Ron’s latest retro Chopper. My guess is the name comes from the blue paint and sissy bar combination or from the way the bike’s owner, Johnny “Rocket” O’Reilly, feels after a long ride. I wish my friends would stop building bikes with perverted names; I still haven’t recovered from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge 2.

Those of you that have been riding for awhile remember the Ironhead Sportster; you either loved them or hated them. I always liked them because I thought they were easier to work on than the Shovelhead. This Ironhead is out of a 1972 XL and has a Mikuni carburetor with a Chop Docs Double Sucker air cleaner and Chop Docs Dual Rockets exhaust. The frame is from Paughco, who have been around so long that they make nearly every part for old school Bobbers and Choppers. The rigid frame has 40° of rake with an additional six inches of stretch. Chop Docs made the custom three-ball sissy bar. The very long eight-inch over Springer front end is from Clay Cobb, and is equipped with a Drag Specialties headlight.

The 21” front wheel is an Invader, as is the 16” rear wheel; I think Ron traded some chickens for the wheels. The gas tank is an old school coffin piece that Ron probably traded some lawn work or trash removal for. The oil tank is out of an old FXR and has been Chop Docked. The flat black with metal flake blue paint was applied in-house by Chop Docs, the scallops and period-correct pinstriping were applied by Dr. Rue. Somewhere in the paint scheme is a hidden image of Indian Larry.

I congratulate Johnny Rocket on his new Chopper, but I refuse to ride behind him when he tries to hand shift his bike while stopped on a hill.
