There might not be as many custom bike builders out there or as many custom bikes being built, but there are still some very special companies that are thriving. Covingtons Customs is one of these companies. Their competition seems to be shrinking, but Covingtons seems just as busy as ever. They now have a bigger rig at shows; they have increased their show schedule and are offering more custom parts for sale.
At first glance, this Chopper from Covingtons looks like the traditional Chopper that we grew up with; that is until you look at the massive 300mm tire on the rear axle. The Choppers of the ’60s weren’t right-side drive unless they were built using a Sportster or Triumph motor. The frame is a classic rigid from Covingtons with a neck rake of 38° and eight-inches of stretch. It needs all of that rake to handle the 16” over Paughco Springer front end. The reliable motor is an 80” Evolution from Harley-Davidson®. Right-side shifting comes from a six-speed JIMS transmission that is attached to a BDL open primary.
Back in the day, 21” front wheels were not the norm for Choppers, but today you rarely see a Chopper that doesn’t have one. The 80-spoke Hallcraft wheel riding on that Springer fork screams vintage. Front braking is courtesy of an HHI rotor and caliper. Yes you can have a front brake and still be cool. The 300mm Avon rear tire sits on a massive 18 x 10.5” 80-spoke wheel, also from Hallcraft. Necessary stopping power is increased with an HHI rotor and caliper. The Flanders handlebars sit atop Paughco risers and are equipped with Performance Machine hand controls. Lighting up front comes from a very vintage looking Headwinds headlight. The rear lighting is provided by a Drag Specialties taillight. Danny Gray worked his magic on the seat which accentuates the Villain gas tank.
The first thing you notice about this Chopper is its aggressive stance. The second thing that catches your eye is the period-correct flames. Dusty Brown and Brian Loker handled the paint and graphics. Covingtons Customs does their painting in house to insure quality and timely delivery. The traditional flames and pinstriping over black paint gives this Chopper an authentic feel.
Not to worry, as long as companies such as Covingtons Customs are around; we will continue to have talented custom builders and jaw-dropping customs. For more information, give them a call at 580.256.2939 or check out www.covingtonscyclecity.com.
