Double Trouble 5/2010

Paul Yaffe keeps bringing me magazine-worthy bikes for American Cycle. I am so used to Paul building amazing Baggers, first with 23” front wheels and now with 26” front wheels; I sometimes forget that he builds some radical non-Baggers as well. It’s hard to turn down bike features from Paul when each one is nicer than the last. What I admire most about the bikes coming from Paul Yaffe Originals, is they are designed to be ridden hard. Paul doesn’t build a bike that he wouldn’t personally ride from Phoenix to Sturgis, and back.

Paul built Double Trouble for Justin Gannon of Glendale, AZ. I was confused by the name since the bike has only a solo seat. I suppose it can get you in double the trouble because it has so much horsepower. Speaking of horsepower, the 110” RevTech motor produces 100 horses. Contributing to that power figure is a Mikuni 45mm carburetor with a Rivera manifold that has been given the Yaffe treatment. The wicked exhaust, which may or may not burn your right butt cheek, is a Yaffe modified SuperTrapp Phantom setup. RevTech was the transmission of choice. Primo supplied the belt drive. PYO made the custom belt guard and pulley nut covers.

The Softail-style frame was manufactured by PYO and features 40° of rake in the neck with an additional four inches of neck drop for an overall frame rake of 46°. The PYO triple trees have six degrees of rake which gives Double Trouble that long and low look that we love. The PYO hidden axle cleans up the chromed Harley-Davidson® lowers. Paul chose to stick with a more practical 21” front wheel which just happens to be a PYO three-spoke GT with Metzeler rubber. Out back is an 18 x 8.5” matching PYO three-spoke GT wheel. Both wheels utilize a 360 Brake system for stopping. Paul’s main man, Gary Crisp, sprayed the elegant gold paint job with pearl white graphics.

I am not sure what Paul will send me next, but I’m willing to guess that it will have plenty of power, a lot of neck rake, a 23” PYO front wheel, a classy paint job from Gary Crisp, and that it will be magazine worthy.
