Road Shark 6/2010

For the past decade, a one-man shop in the Bay Area of Northern California called GP Designs, has been building some of the cleanest customs on the planet. When George Pacheco, owner of GP Designs, is not building bikes, he is producing some amazing parts to enhance stock Harleys. George believes that you may never own a custom bike, but you can easily customize your stock bike. Some of GP’s parts are designed to make your bike look better, while others are designed to make your bike run better.

This GP Designs Custom Softail is a prime example of George’s craftsmanship. Scott Hultquist of Riff Raff customs sprayed the House of Kolor Galaxy Gray paint and Pearl White graphics. New Age Chrome Plating of Fresno, CA handled all of the chrome.

Ron Cairns completely rebuilt the 113” S&S Evolution-style motor using an RC Cycles camshaft, Dynatek ignition, and cylinder heads modified for flow by RC Cycles. Lifter blocks are from JIMS, most other motor components are S&S products.

A foot-shifted, six-speed Baker Drivetrain gearbox handles the 145 horsepower and 130 ft.-lbs. of torque. A chain-equipped primary drive moves the twist from the motor to the transmission’s mainshaft. The power then passes through the Baker gears to the transmission output pulley and on to the rear wheel.

GP Designs produced the Softail-style frame which utilizes Legend Air Suspension. Up front is 38° of neck rake with a one-inch over Perse hydraulic fork. The Perse fork combined with Legend Air Suspension in the rear results in high-mileage comfort for the rider.

Eighteen-inch Performance Machine Hustler wheels hustle the Road Shark down the pavement in style. Front-wheel braking comes from a Performance Machine six-piston caliper and wheel-matching rotor. Rear braking is handled by a four-piston PM caliper and PM rotor. A Metzeler 130/70-18 tire does the steering up front, while a 180/55-18 does the pushing. GP Designs components on this bike include: grips, risers, mirrors, gas tank, fenders, and oil tank. Oil lines are from RC Cycles. Foot controls and hand controls are Contour components from Performance Machine. The taillight and license plate mount are from Paul Yaffe, the headlight is from Headwinds.
