Anti-Rub 6/2010

Since we completely customized a 100th Anniversary V-Rod, we see no problems with Doomtown Choppers completely revamping an anniversary Softail. Many Harley diehards would consider this act to be heresy. Since the production run on ’03 Harley-Davidson® Softails was 18 months, and every ’03 bike was an anniversary bike, the chances of these bikes appreciating is remote at best. Chris Phillips of Doomtown Choppers could care less, he knew what he wanted, and he built it.

At first, second and third glance, you would never guess that this Softail began its journey at the Harley factory. The stock 88” Twin Cam B motor has been retained; with the addition of a Doomtown Choppers exhaust system and air cleaner. The stock frame has been extensively remodeled with a single-curved downtube, ribs on the seat rails, six inches of forward stretch, and a neck rake of 37°. An additional five inches of stretch was added to the triple trees, giving this bike a low and long Chopper stance. Evil Engineering supplied the classic open-belt drive. The stock transmission is hand shifted and the clutch is foot actuated. The custom handlebars with Hex grips were manufactured in-house by Doomtown. I am sure they would be happy to build a set for you. The rear fender is from West Coast Choppers, with some heavy modifications from Doomtown. The crazy-exploded coffin tank was built by Chris Phillips.

Chris is a longtime fan of legendary eccentric bike builder, Ron Finch. While at a show, Chris’ bike was noticed by one of Ron’s good friends. After introductions were made, it was decided that Chris needed to meet Ron. The two builders soon became fast friends and Ron has become a mentor to Chris. When the bike was ready for paint, none other than Ron Finch and his main-man Zigs were chosen. Or was Chris chosen by Ron? Finch’s Industrial Dream paint scheme is silver, black, blue pearl, silver metal flake and some effects that only the demented mind of Ron Finch could come up with. Chris’ “Anti-Rub” Chopper may be crazy to some, but to its owner/builder, it’s been a great ride!
