I hate to repeat myself but I can’t seem to stop. Here we go once again; the FXR is the best bike that Harley ever built! That being said, if you were able to upgrade the motor to a high-horsepower Twin Cam and the aftermarket frame had a 180 rear tire; the best bike would then become better. That is exactly what Brent Schmenk of Frisco, TX did.
To kickoff his FXR build, Brent bought a Screamin’ Eagle 110’’ Twin Cam motor and had Ben Breece Harley-Davidson of Ottawa, OH rebuild it. A Mikuni 45mm carburetor, Dusold Designs exhaust and a Wimmer Machine air cleaner were added to get the bike breathing deeper. The heads and cylinders were diamond cut. Billet lifter blocks and pushrod covers were installed, as were automatic compression releases. Next, Brent picked up a rubber-mounted, FXR-style frame with 31° of rake that accommodates a 180mm rear tire.
To assist the Harley-Davidson® six-speed transmission with shifting, a hydraulic clutch was installed. The 41mm Mid Glide fork is from HHI. It has no rake in the trees, which provides that traditional look that us FXR guys love. Evolution Industries supplied the matching 60-spoke wheels; a 21” up front and an 18” in the rear. Up front are dual HHI six-piston calipers with Ride Wright rotors. Rear braking is upgraded with a six-piston HHI caliper and a Ride Wright rotor.
The handlebars with built-in risers are from Carlini and are equipped with Performance Machine Contour grips and hand controls. The tank is a Custom Chrome model that Brent modified. The fenders are from Russ Wernimont Designs but have been modified by Strokers Dallas. Accutronix supplied the forward controls and footpegs. Initial assembly was performed by Brent with some help from Strokers Dallas, not bad for a first effort. Dusold Designs applied the black with marbleized silver and red paint scheme. They also assisted with the final assembly.
Brent has always wanted an FXR. When Harley came out with the FXR 3, he was living 1200 miles from home; so he had his dad call the local Harley dealer to see if they had one. His dad called back with some good news and some bad news. The good news: they had one. The bad news: Brent’s dad purchased the bike for himself. Brent has been on a quest to find the perfect FXR ever since and finally decided to build his own. We think it was worth the wait!
